A Category That Has Disappeared

The 2025 Bihar Assembly elections marked a major shift in state politics. One of the biggest changes was the complete disappearance of Independent MLAs in Bihar. Voters turned out in record numbers, yet not a single independent candidate could enter the Assembly. This shows how the space for independents is shrinking. The decline of Independent MLAs in Bihar has continued for 25 years and has now reached zero.

In earlier years, independents played a strong role. In one election, 33 independents won seats. Even in 2000, 20 of them reached the Assembly. But since then, their number has dropped in every election. By 2020, only one independent MLA won, and in 2025, the number fell to zero.

This change also reflects a rise in bipolar voting. Voters now prefer big alliances over small parties or individual candidates. In 2000, independents and smaller parties had 36.8% vote share. In 2025, it fell to just 15.5%. Many analysts say this shift helped the NDA in 2025.

Political history also shows how independents once influenced several seats. But today, Bihar’s politics has moved towards alliance-based voting, leaving no room for independents.
