Abigail Spanberger has made history by becoming the first woman elected governor of Virginia. The Democrat defeated Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears, flipping the governor’s office from Republican to Democratic control. Her victory marks a major win for Democrats ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Spanberger, a former congresswoman and CIA officer, built her campaign around economic growth, education, and public safety. Her focus on practical solutions and bipartisan cooperation appealed to voters across the political spectrum in the swing state.
Born and raised in Virginia, Spanberger attended public schools in Henrico County before earning a degree from the University of Virginia. She later completed an MBA through a program between Purdue University and GISMA Business School in Germany.
Her early career included work as a federal law enforcement officer investigating narcotics and child exploitation. She then served as a CIA case officer, protecting the nation from terrorism and transnational threats.
In Congress, Spanberger earned praise for her bipartisan record, particularly on agriculture, veterans’ issues, and environmental protection. Known for her independent approach, she now brings her experience and leadership to the governor’s office. She lives in Virginia with her husband, Adam, and their three daughters.
