AI Boost for DigiLocker: India’s Next Digital Leap

MeitY adds AI-based eKYC and global verification to DigiLocker, marking India’s next leap in digital governance.

The Ministry of Electronics and IT announced plans to integrate AI-based eKYC and global credential verification into the DigiLocker platform. This initiative aims to enhance the platform’s trust and interoperability across governance, education, and industry sectors.

Once a simple document storage system, DigiLocker has now evolved into a national trust layer connecting citizens with ministries and departments. The National e-Governance Division (NeGD) organized a national conference to showcase DigiLocker’s role in transforming digital governance and inclusive education.

MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan said DigiLocker enables secure and accountable digital governance. He emphasized that India’s digital journey is now advancing from digitalization to trust, empowering citizens and institutions alike. Additional Secretary Abhishek Singh outlined DigiLocker’s future powered by AI-based verification, setting a global benchmark for paperless governance.

Presentations highlighted DigiLocker’s integration with Maharashtra’s pension and treasury systems and Assam’s Sewa Setu Portal offering 500+ services. Seven states, including Kerala, Assam, and Mizoram, were recognized as “DigiLocker Accelerators” for their achievements. DigiLocker now allows citizens to securely access, verify, and share identity, financial, and educational documents online.
