Hostage Eli Sharabi’s Fight to Free Gaza Captives

Free Gaza Captives

Eli Sharabi spent 16 months trapped in dark tunnels under Gaza. His legs were chained, his meals were moldy pita, and he survived with three other hostages. At 53, he became a father figure to the younger men, encouraging them to pray, exercise, and celebrate small wins.

Sharabi was released in February, weighing only 44 kilograms. That was when he discovered the heartbreaking truth—his wife and two teenage daughters had been killed in their home during the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack. His brother Yossi was also killed.

During captivity, Sharabi grew close to 24-year-old Alon Ohel, a sensitive piano player. He still fears for him. When Sharabi was freed, Ohel was left behind. The last time Sharabi saw him was in a hostage video—thin, pale, and struggling.

Sharabi has since written a memoir, Hostage, and become a leading voice for the return of the remaining 48 captives, around 20 believed alive. He has met world leaders, addressed the UN, and keeps calling for peace to bring them home.

For Sharabi, there is no closure until Alon and the others return. His message to Ohel: “Stay strong. We will bring you back.
