A man carrying a knife attacked a police officer near the US Embassy in Tokyo on Friday. The police quickly arrested him at the scene. Reports say a riot policeman suffered injuries, but the seriousness of his wounds is still unclear.
Authorities are investigating why the suspect carried out the attack. So far, they haven’t shared any details about his motive.
This incident happened just days before former US President Donald Trump’s planned visit to Japan from October 27 to 29. During his stay, Trump is expected to meet Japan’s Emperor Naruhito and the newly elected Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi.
Because of the high-profile visit, Tokyo’s Metropolitan Police Department has increased security across the city. According to Kyodo News, officials have deployed up to 18,000 extra officers to ensure safety during Trump’s visit.
The attack has raised fresh security concerns in Tokyo, especially with international attention on the upcoming meetings between US and Japanese leaders.
