Migrant Workers Torn Between Livelihood and Voting

Bihar Election migrant workers leaving North Bihar for Delhi

Many families are struggling during the Bihar Election migrant workers season. As election dates approach and festivals like Diwali and Chhath near, thousands from North Bihar districts such as Saharsa, Supaul, Madhepura, Purnia, and Darbhanga are boarding buses to Delhi. They leave behind their villages, not out of choice, but because earning a living is more urgent than casting a vote.

Drivers say buses are packed daily. “We have no concern with elections,” says Sabir, a co-driver. People celebrate Chhath on the Yamuna’s banks, far from home. Many migrants say if there were jobs in Bihar, they wouldn’t have to leave. For them, survival comes first. “How can we stay until elections if we can’t even afford food?” one traveler asks.

The Bihar Election migrant workers issue highlights the painful trade-off between livelihood and democracy. Until Bihar creates stable local jobs, this exodus will continue every election season.
