Ozempic Launched in India for Type 2 Diabetes Treatment

Ozempic, a once-weekly injectable drug containing semaglutide, has been launched in India for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in adults. Approved as a first-line therapy along with diet and exercise, the drug is expected to offer better glycaemic control with the added benefit of weight reduction. Ozempic belongs to the class of GLP-1 receptor agonists, which help regulate blood sugar by enhancing insulin secretion, reducing glucagon levels and slowing gastric emptying. Medical experts say the availability of semaglutide in India marks a significant advancement in diabetes care, particularly for patients struggling with obesity and poor glucose control. The drug, administered once a week, may improve treatment adherence compared to daily injections or oral medicines. However, doctors caution that it should be used under strict medical supervision due to possible side effects such as nausea and gastrointestinal discomfort. The launch is expected to benefit millions of Indians living with diabetes.
