As India and Canada resume diplomatic relations, Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), a pro-Khalistan group based in the US, has threatened to “siege” the Indian Consulate in Vancouver. The group said it will take control of the consulate on Thursday and advised Indo-Canadians, who had planned to visit, to choose another date.
SFJ also released a poster targeting the Indian High Commissioner, Dinish Patnaik, and accused Indian consulates of running a spy network to monitor Khalistani supporters. The group referred to a statement made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau two years ago, where he mentioned an investigation into the role of Indian agents in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The SFJ claims that surveillance continues against Khalistani Referendum campaigners.
The group also claimed that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) provided witness protection to Inderjeet Singh Gosal, the new leader of the Khalistan Referendum campaign, due to threats after Nijjar’s death.
The Canadian government recently acknowledged that extremist Khalistani groups in Canada receive financial support. These groups include Babbar Khalsa International and the International SYF, both listed as terrorist organizations under Canadian law.
