Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal visited Nabha Jail on Friday to meet his brother-in-law and senior party leader Bikram Singh Majithia. He was joined by his wife, Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal, and Majithia’s wife Ganieve Kaur. The visit came amid rumors of tensions within the Badal family and was seen as a show of unity.
After the meeting, Sukhbir Badal accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of targeting political rivals. He compared Majithia’s case to the struggles faced by past SAD leaders, including his late father, Parkash Singh Badal. He also criticized Patiala SSP Varun Sharma for alleged “unethical conduct.”
Earlier this week, Dera Beas chief Gurinder Singh Dhillon also visited Majithia in jail. The dera enjoys a strong following across Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh, making the visit politically significant.
Majithia was arrested in June 2024 by the Vigilance Bureau in a disproportionate assets case linked to alleged laundering of ₹540 crore of “drug money.” A chargesheet of more than 40,000 pages was later filed. He had earlier faced an NDPS case in 2021, based on a 2018 STF report. Majithia previously spent over five months in Patiala jail before getting bail in August 2022.
