Trump Meets Sharif: Thaw in US-Pakistan Ties

Trump Meets Sharif US-Pakistan Ties

US President Donald Trump met Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the Oval Office on Thursday, marking a fresh chapter in relations between the two countries. Pakistan’s Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, also joined the talks, along with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Ahead of the meeting, Trump praised both leaders as “great guys” and welcomed them warmly. The visit followed a brief exchange between Trump and Sharif at the UN General Assembly earlier in the week.

During the White House visit, discussions focused on trade and energy. Pakistan recently signed agreements with US companies to supply critical minerals and rare earth elements. A US firm has committed $500 million to Pakistan’s mining sector, while Washington has promised to help develop the country’s vast oil reserves.

The trade numbers are also growing. In 2024, US-Pakistan trade reached $10.1 billion, up 6.3% from the previous year. Imports from Pakistan stood at $5.1 billion, while US exports to Pakistan touched $2.1 billion.

Trump has hosted Munir several times in recent months, especially after India and Pakistan clashed in May. Islamabad has even nominated Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, crediting him for helping secure a ceasefire with India—though New Delhi firmly denies this claim.
