The United States has called the recent car explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort a “clear terrorist attack.” At least nine people were killed in the blast earlier this week.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised India for its professionalism and restraint in handling the investigation. “The Indians need to be commended. They’ve been very measured, cautious, and professional,” Rubio told reporters. He added that the attack involved a car loaded with powerful explosives.
Rubio said India was doing “a very good job” with the probe and would release facts once confirmed. He also revealed that he had offered support to India during a conversation with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar but noted that India was “very capable” of handling the investigation independently.
The two leaders met on the sidelines of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Canada, where Rubio extended condolences for the victims.
Indian authorities have confirmed that the Red Fort blast was a “terrorist incident.” Home Minister Amit Shah has ordered a nationwide hunt for the culprits. Officials linked the suspects to the Pakistan-based group Jaish-e-Mohammed, which was found possessing large quantities of explosives and weapons.
