US Vice President JD Vance said he hopes his wife, Usha Vance, who was raised Hindu, will one day be inspired by the Catholic faith. Speaking at a Turning Point USA event in Mississippi on Wednesday, Vance said that Usha often joins him for church on Sundays.
“I do hope she’s moved by what moves me in church,” he said. “I believe in the Christian gospel and hope my wife comes to see it the same way.” Vance also said their different beliefs don’t cause problems in their marriage. “God gives everyone free will,” he added. “Faith is something you work out with your family and loved ones.”
Vance converted to Catholicism in 2019. When he met Usha, he described himself as an agnostic. The couple’s children are raised Christian and attend a Christian school.
During the event, Vance defended his belief that Christian values form an important foundation for the United States. His comments come amid growing online hostility toward Indians and Hindus, with racist posts appearing under Diwali greetings shared by Indian-American officials.
His remarks about faith and family drew loud applause from the conservative audience.
